“Eastern Canada is known for producing great talent, bolstered by a supportive community. The Atlantic Provinces have a unique advantage of being close knit and kindred. We want to help each other succeed. Fortunate Ones have created a beautiful debut in THE BLISS. They’re just getting started and are already ahead. I’m excited to welcome this very talented duo to Old Farm Pony Records.” – Rose Cousins
Their debut album, The Bliss, is a culmination of beautiful pop melodies, with folk harmonies and infectious choruses that have every audience singing along. Produced by Daniel Ledwell, it was recorded at Lake Echo on Nova Scotia’s eastern shore during the early months of 2014. The album features guest appearances by East Coast favourites Jenn Grant, Don Brownrigg and Kinley Dowling.
Both from The Rock, the duo, made up of Mount Pearl’s Andrew James O’Brien (singer / guitar) and Corner Brook’s Catherine Allan (singer, pianist, accordion player), met in the capital, St. John’s. Andrew received a nomination at the 2012 East Coast Music Awards for his solo album, Songs For Searchers, having toured extensively across Canada and the UK, with Catherine accompanying him. It was during this time that they realized the direction their music was naturally leaning towards and decided to form as Fortunate Ones. “We put a name on something that was naturally occurring, and then we took steps to follow it up,” recalls Andrew. “We would share equal duties vocally, musically, and conversing with the audience. It wasn’t Andrew James O’Brien with Catherine Allan anymore – it was already Fortunate Ones.”
Plain and simple, they consider themselves fortunate to pursue their dreams. Their name reflects shared experiences with audiences. It is about connecting people of all kinds, to make strangers friends, to elicit feelings of joy, hope, sadness, and contemplation – and the spirit that we are all in this together.
